Sildenafil, Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are all FDA-approved medications for erectile dysfunction (ED). Learn about their history, benefits, and precautions.
The table below summarizes the main facts about these ED medications:
Mechanism of action:The primary mechanism of action of the drugs is in relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which allows for increased blood flow during sexual stimulation. This process helps men achieve and maintain an erection.
Pharmacokinetics:The drugs are absorbed quickly and peak plasma levels within 30 minutes of ingestion. They are fast-acting, and their effects generally last for as long as four to five hours. They are effective when taken as directed.
Indications:The primary indication for the drugs is the treatment of ED. The ED treatment may also include other medications to treat conditions that have not been treated with other ED medications.
Uses:The primary uses for the drugs are for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). For men who cannot achieve or maintain an erection, or who are unable to achieve or maintain an erection, the drugs may be used to treat ED.

The table shows that ED medications are quickly absorbed, rapidly eliminated, and in a short period of time have the ability to be effective when taken as directed.ED is a condition characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It occurs when the penis does not fully contract and is caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis. ED is often confused with impotence and low blood pressure. This is a medical condition called vascular disease or vascular insufficiency. It’s also known as vascular thrombosis.
ED may also occur in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. In people with diabetes, the blood vessels in the lungs become narrow and the blood pressure drops. These blood pressure drops are called vasodilatation (low blood pressure).
ED can also occur in certain people with a genetic tendency to develop ED.
Viagra, the little blue pill that treats, is getting much-needed attention. But what exactly is it used for?
The drug works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to particular areas of the body, but it doesn’t treat every issue, according to Dr. David H. Hlatky, a urologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
“If I’m trying to have sex, I’m not going to use it,” Hlatky toldThe Daily News.“If I’m going to have sex, you have to take it,” he said.
A study published last year in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinefound that men who take Viagra, the little blue pill, are slightly more likely to experience erectile dysfunction than those who take a placebo. However, men taking the drug experience no significant sexual side effects.
The study’s authors, Dr. Hlatky and colleagues, recruited more than 700 men with ED who were taking an ED drug to assess their sex lives. The researchers determined that Viagra, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, was the most effective treatment for ED in this group.
But the study found that men who took the drug experienced no significant sexual side effects — such as erectile dysfunction, or impotence, or a lack of sexual desire — at least once every 24 hours. The study found that Viagra, which is available as a generic, was the most effective treatment for ED in this group, with no significant sexual side effects.
This makes the drug’s ability to treat ED the top priority.
According to Hlatky, Viagra is not just a treatment for erectile dysfunction; it’s also an effective treatment for male erectile dysfunction, which can cause painful sex problems like erectile dysfunction.
“The research shows that the drugs are highly effective for treating male erectile dysfunction,” Hlatky said. “We’ve seen that for most men with ED.”
For example, a study conducted in the late 1990s by researchers at Harvard Medical School found that a single dose of Viagra, the little blue pill, reduced the number of men experiencing erectile dysfunction by 50 percent. That research found that Viagra was the most effective treatment for ED, with a half-life of 8 hours, meaning that in 30 minutes Viagra was absorbed through the skin. Hlatky also found that Viagra significantly improved a man’s sex life, but only if he took the drug 60 minutes before intercourse.
The drug was approved by the FDA in 2003. But the drug is not a cure for ED, and it does not treat underlying health problems. And because of the drug’s side effects, it’s also not recommended for women.
But Hlatky said that’s not entirely true. “If you’re trying to treat something,” he said, “you’re still going to have to take it.”
Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor that works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis. This allows for more blood flow, which can help you achieve and maintain an erection.
But, Hlatky noted, it doesn’t treat all problems, and some of the side effects are more likely to be temporary. He noted that Viagra is also not a cure for a certain kind of medical condition, so it’s not ideal to try to treat ED with drugs like Viagra or similar drugs. “Viagra is a good drug to take to treat your ED,” Hlatky said.
For now, he’s holding back from talking to his patients about it. “I’ve got my ED,” he said.

Viagra gel is the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to have sexual intercourse. Viagra gel is a prescription-only treatment that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). However, there is currently no drug approved for the treatment of ED, and the use of Viagra gel for this purpose is still under investigation.
Viagra gel is a medication designed to help men with ED maintain and regain confidence. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. The gel is applied directly to the penis, typically on the base of the penis. The gel is then absorbed into the bloodstream and helps achieve and maintain an erection. It is available in a range of dosages and is typically taken once or twice daily, depending on the individual’s needs.
Viagra gel comes in a gel-like form. It is applied directly to the penis. The active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, is a PDE5 inhibitor. This means that it blocks the action of the enzyme that breaks down the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a chemical in the body that is responsible for producing cGMP. cGMP is a chemical that relaxes the smooth muscle cells in the penis and increases blood flow to the penis. Viagra gel is effective in treating erectile dysfunction (ED). It can also help men who have underlying health conditions that might contribute to their erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis.
There are several benefits of using Viagra gel. These benefits include:
Viagra gel takes around 30 minutes to start working. Its effects can last for up to 4 hours. Depending on the individual’s response to the medication, this can vary from as little as 15 minutes to as much as 6 hours. It is important to note that this is a prescription-only medication, and it should not be taken by women or children. In some cases, the effects may take up to 12 hours to be felt. For men, the gel may take longer to start working if they are taking medications containing nitrates, or other medications that increase blood pressure.
Viagra gel is not recommended for use in women and children. It is also not recommended for use in the elderly, as it has not been studied for effectiveness. Therefore, women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid the drug.
You can use Viagra gel for the treatment of ED, but it is not FDA approved for the treatment of ED. It is safe to use if you are also taking medications, and Viagra gel should not be used if you are also taking nitrates for chest pain or as a substitute for a nitrate medication. In addition to the ED treatment listed above, Viagra gel should also not be used for the treatment of high blood pressure or heart disease.
While there is no FDA-approved medication for the treatment of ED, Viagra gel is considered safe to use during pregnancy.
